Former Nationwide General Counsel joins gunnercooke

Liz Kelly, former General Counsel at Nationwide Building Society, has joined innovative law firm gunnercooke. Following a high profile panel review, Kelly left her role at the building society at the end of 2013. In her time at Nationwide, she was renowned for her innovative approach to building and managing a team of over 50 lawyers across 8 legal disciplines. Kelly is passionate about people development, having also launched and chaired a Nationwide legal academy for high performers, with 4 – 8 years pqe, aimed at developing future General Counsel.

At gunnercooke, Kelly’s primary role will be to co-ordinate and strengthen relationships with larger corporate clients, as-well as working with and helping to develop the firm’s senior lawyers in London. Her arrival brings the total number of gunnercooke partners to 60. The firm’s vision of providing senior, quality legal advice for a fixed cost is one that is providing value to an increasing number of plc and corporate businesses, so there is certainly plenty for Kelly to go at.

Speaking on her new challenge, Kelly said: “I’m delighted to be joining gunnercooke at a very exciting time. It’s clear that the firm is completely rethinking the way in which legal services are provided, so that the value of the advice (not the cost of providing it) determines what the client pays and this amount is agreed and fixed at the outset.  As the GC of Nationwide and a buyer of legal services I was very passionate about how the legal industry needed to fundamentally change to put the client first and also for firms to understand what else (other than price) is really important to clients.  So it will be fantastic to be able to use my experience to ensure that gunnercooke is a “standout” law firm in this respect.  Of course a firm can only achieve this if we ensure that we have the given all our lawyers the opportunity, infrastructure and training to be able to perform at their very best and I am delighted to also have taken on the role of Organisational and Performance Director for the London Team.”

Speaking on Liz’s arrival, gunnercooke founder Darryl Cooke said: gunnercooke‘s growth has been remarkable. In 4 years we have grown to 60 partners with offices in London and Manchester. It is very gratifying when partners of Liz’s calibre choose to join us. Liz is one of the most experienced and innovative lawyers in the market and we are delighted that she has joined gunnercooke. She will play a major part in our continuing growth, and I am very much looking forward to working alongside her.”
