Symposium 2018: A sneak peek at our venues for this year

August 9, 2018

It’s just over a month to go until we head down to Oxford for our fifth annual Symposium!

We’re currently putting the final touches to the programme, though it’s shaping up to be our best yet. What better time to take a quick look at the accommodation and venues we’ll be taking over this year…

New College, University of Oxford

Despite its name, New College is actually one of the oldest of the Oxford colleges. Founded in 1379 by William of Wykeham, the college is a striking example of the perpendicular style of Gothic architecture. Expect plenty of bold vertical lines!

Along with the Garden Quadrangle (pictured above) that’s said to have been modelled on the Palace of Versailles, the dining hall of the college is one of its most impressive features. You may be interested to know that Wykeham originally forbade all forms wrestling, dancing and noisy games in the hall due to its close proximity to the college chapel, and prescribed the sole use of Latin in conversation.

Whilst we expect the ‘no wrestling’ rule to remain intact, we’ll probably be sticking to English this time around.

The Sheldonian Theatre

Designed by Christopher Wren in 1664, the Sheldonian Theatre is an an exquisite Grade I listed building situated in Oxford’s city centre. It is the official ceremonial hall of the University of Oxford.

This will be the venue for Day One of this year’s Symposium, a quick five-minute walk from New College. We’ll be heading to the Sheldonian for a welcome address and our first keynote presentation by Jim Lawless. If you haven’t already, make sure to read a little more about Jim’s expertise below.

The Saïd Business School

We’ll be heading to the Saïd Business School for Day Two, situated slightly further from New College, roughly 15 minutes by foot.

The school doubles as a world-class venue space, equipped with excellent audio-visual facilities and super fast wifi coverage perfect for all your posting / tweeting needs on the day! As well as our planned keynotes, we’ll also be hosting a range of breakout sessions here.

Not long now!
