Charity and Philanthropy

Expertise

Robert is an experienced charity and more-than-profit lawyer, specialising in advising registered charities on charity legal, regulatory and governance issues at all stages of their journey: establishing new charities, incorporating existing organisations, advising on collaboration or merger issues and, where necessary, on dissolution.

He engages with the Charity Commission on behalf of clients in seeking necessary approvals and dealing with serious incident reporting, and advises on charities’ dealings with non-charities such as trading subsidiaries, corporate partners, sponsors and commissioning bodies.

He works closely with colleagues in gunnercooke’s charities team – in particular with employment, commercial, corporate, real estate and private client lawyers – to provide clients with integrated and responsive solutions to help them to manage their legal risks.

He also advises business clients and philanthropists on setting up their own foundations and on their dealings with charities, in the context of the increasing prominence of “ESG.”

Robert understands the importance of delivering timely, pragmatic and impactful advice to enable clients to effectively advance their charitable purposes and achieve positive outcomes.

He has particular interest in promoting more collaboration between the business and social sectors and in encouraging more philanthropy and broadening its practice, and uses his own network to facilitate these aims, and has developed a niche practice establishing and advising corporate foundations for purposeful businesses.

Currently Robert sits on the board of The Charity Service, a donor-advised fund and grant maker, and is a member of the Youth and Community Committee of Manchester YMCA. He has been recognised by the Legal 500 directory.
