House of Books & Friends finalist for Independent Bookshop of the Year

February 19, 2026

Community Interest Company House of Books & Friends has been shortlisted for the Independent Bookshop of the Year Award, recognised as a regional finalist in the North of England category.

The list, collated by The Bookseller, celebrates outstanding independent bookshops across the UK and Ireland, highlighting spaces that champion books, community, and cultural connection.

Located on King Street in Manchester city centre, House of Books & Friends is situated within a Grade II-listed building. The historic location was once a private members’ club and is known to have been frequented by Winston Churchill, adding a rich sense of heritage to the space.

Opening its doors at the end of 2022 backed by global law firm, gunnercooke, the bookshop was created as an environment where people could come together over books, coffee, and cake. The goal of the bookshop is to combat social isolation and loneliness through the many events they host, including panel discussions, workshops, author talks, and book clubs. Every penny of profit goes back into community projects. At its core, the space is about connection, bringing readers, writers, and the wider community together.

Darryl Cooke, Founder of gunnercooke, said: “Our ambition with this bookshop was to create a space in the community that would help tackle social isolation. To be recognised as a finalist for Independent Bookshop of the Year is testament to the success the team have seen over the past three years. House of Books & Friends is now recognised as part of the heart of Manchester’s social scene and an example of the importance of having deeper meaning.”
