September 21, 2021

Helen Miles, Pensions Partner at challenger law firm gunnercooke, has been appointed to serve a further term as Chair of the NHS Pensions Board by the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Sajid Javid.

Midlands-based Helen was initially appointed in 2019. Her re-appointment will be for a further 3 years from 1 April 2022 and involves a commitment of up to 3 days per month.

The NHS Pensions Board is the statutory body responsible for the governance of the NHS Pension Scheme.  The Pensions Board up is made up of representatives from NHS employers and NHS Pension Scheme members, with the Chair role being independent.  The NHS Pension Scheme has more than 3.25 million members.

Helen Miles commented: “I am delighted to be appointed for a further term as Chair of the NHS Pensions Board.  The Board has operated well during the pandemic period, when the demands upon its members as individuals have been unprecedented.  Public service pension schemes have some major projects to implement in the years to come.  My pensions legal expertise and ongoing operational experience will be key to leading the Board on these issues.”

gunnercooke’s Pensions team has seen significant growth in the past year, including the recruitment of Helen, making it one of the largest dedicated senior pensions teams in the UK. The team was recently shortlisted at the UK Pensions Awards and Helen has been shortlisted for Lawyer of the Year at the Women in Pensions Awards.
