Expertise

Whether I am advising on groundbreaking deals (the 4th only Clara deal) or advising and wining disputes for individuals, my attitude is the same:

  • I stand by my clients at every step,
  • I’m committed to delivering the best possible outcome,
  • I’m backed by an exceptional team that makes it all possible.

It’s a given I know the law, however what is vital to my clients and advisors I work with, is how I apply that law and my practical experience, gained over the last 30 years, to achieve the right solutions.  During my long pensions career, I have encountered all scenarios from ground breaking deals; advising on one of the first schemes to transfer to the Pension Protection Fund, working with the Work and Pensions Secretary to change pensions legislation, most recently advising on only the 4th scheme to transfer to Clara, to run of the mill but vitally important, pensions advice, and all done with the same attitude.

One of the keys to my building trusting working relationships with my clients, is to take time to understand my clients’ issues, not just pension issues, but also their business or personal issues, without which, I don’t have the full picture, it’s so vital to get the full picture, so I can advise effectively.

I am known for working well with all parties to achieve a successful, commercial, cost effective and common sense outcome.

Previously working as a Professional Trustee of a large award-winning professional trustee company for over 10 years, managing several trustee appointments enabled me to anticipate actions of both trustees and corporates alike.  I have continued my role as a professional trustee by becoming an Associate Director of gcTrustees.

Experience Highlights

  • Advising The Church Mission Society on transferring their scheme to Clara (only the 4th deal to date (June 2025)) .  The first with a connected covenant structure.  My team and I worked tirelessly with my client, and the many advisors, and the Pensions Regulator to obtain Clearance, to achieve the best result for our client, so it could continue to provide its international charitable support to all it Mission Partners and communities, whilst also looking after its pension scheme members.  A highly rewarding experience, recognised by the testimonial below.
  • Advising a large charity on defects in pension scheme documents, dating back to the early 90s, adding a significant pensions liability, working to rectify the defects with complex new solutions and documents, and also bringing a complex claim against the previous advisors.
  • Advising an individual on a pensions dispute, to successfully obtain death benefits in a complex situation, involving an ex-spouse, disputes over nomination forms and wills, and I successfully achieved the payment of significant funds from UK and US pension schemes for my client.
  • Advising on a property matter, where our client, the buyer, wishes to purchase property worth over £5m from a SIPP, where the trustees have died or no longer exist.  Working with my property, litigation and private client colleagues, on a workaround solution to change the pension scheme trusteeship, and change Land Registry restrictions, so the sale could proceed.
  • Advising an individual in a dispute against a local authority, dating back to 2010, in relation to the Local Government Pension Scheme, where early ill-health benefits payable on a terminal illness were disputed by the LA. Working with an amazingly resilient client, who is still undergoing cancer treatment, we won a Pensions Ombudsman claim to obtain life changing monies for my client and family.
  • Advising a large automobile company through a group restructuring, involving numerous Flexible Apportionment Arrangements, advising the French parent, negotiating with the Pension Regulator, and the pension scheme trustees, so that we could arrive at a practical and commercially viable solution for the group and the pension scheme trustee and members.
  • Advising an international company on funding negotiations during an actuarial valuation, working with a corporate actuary, I recommended, in an attempt to save costs, whilst also supporting the pension scheme.
  • Advising clients on governance, Effective Systems of Governance (ESOGs) and Own Risk Assessment (ORA), getting clients ready by auditing and providing a policy gap analysis.  I have partnered with an innovative provider to offer a legal and practical streamlined process, at a competitive price.
  • Advising various sponsors and pension scheme trustees on M&A transactions, finding solutions to handle pension scheme liabilities involving defined benefit schemes, whether that’s through Escrow accounts, tPR clearance, or a mixture of commercial solutions, to get the deals over the line.
  • Advising various sponsors and trustees on de-risking, buy-ins, buy-out, offering advise on superfund solutions, which were thought to be out of reach, but are being considered as an option.
