Richard Woodward is an experienced commercial and private client dispute resolution senior associate.

Richard qualified in 2014 and has worked on a myriad of different disputes, from assisting on a dispute concerning the appeal of a decision made by the Motor Insurance Bureau which was heard by the Court of Appeal, to the reported cases of Microlise Ltd v James Kemball Ltd [2023] EWHC 579 (KB) and Costcutter Supermarkets Group Limited v Vaish and Another [2024] EWHC 152 (KB).

His commercial clients range from large international corporations to SMEs. Richard has helped clients with contractual disputes, disputed debt recovery, property related disputes and breach of restrictive covenants.

Additionally, Richard has dealt in a number of private client disputes, varying from TOLATA cases to litigation involving breaches of rights of way. Richard has taken on a niche in contentious probate matters, dealing with 1975 Act claims, proprietary estoppel claims, invalid will claims, and trust disputes.

Richard has been a member of the Association of Contentious Trust and Probate Specialists (ACTAPS) in 2022. ACTAPS is an organisation that promotes the enhancement of skills, specialisms and expertise in contentious probate.

Richard trained under various Legal 500 recognised lawyers and was featured in the same in 2021 as a key lawyer within his firm’s Commercial Dispute Resolution department. He approaches matters by trying to learn the client’s key objectives and finding the best possible way to achieve that as successfully as possible.

  • Advising a manufacturer of telematics in a dispute involving the supply of systems to a third-party that denied payment of the same and sought to bring a substantial counterclaim for damages for loss of profit.
  • Advising a well-known chain of convenience shops and supermarkets in many disputed high-value debt recovery matters.
  • Advising a well-known legal publisher and data analytics company in recovering its disputed debts which involved the interpretation of its contractual terms.
  • Assisting a private client in a claim for breach of right of way and harassment over a neighbouring property, the matter involving applications for injunctions and appeals.
  • Assisting an estate with the removal of a family member that refused to leave the family home, necessitating an application for a grant of ad colligenda bona.
  • Advising a private client over a trust that she had entered into that prevented her from selling her property and seeking removal of her fellow trustee to allow the sale.
