Starting a new job can be daunting for everyone, but for Liz Turner, Property and Litigation Partner, her first year at gunnercooke has been full of exciting challenges, rewarding collaborations, and incredible personal and professional growth.

From navigating the early days of running her own business, to working on high-profile cases and building strong relationships with colleagues, her journey at gunnercooke has been transformative.

To celebrate the milestone, we asked Liz to reflect on her first year, the lessons she’s learned, and what’s next on the horizon for her practice.

  1. What’s been your highlight at gunnercooke so far?

There have been a few great highlights for me, including meeting so many amazing new colleagues, everyone has been so welcoming and helpful. It’s been really refreshing. gunnercooke has a real focus on its people and cultivating a supporting culture of helping each other.

  1. What has been your biggest hurdle when joining gunnercooke, and how did you manage to push through?

My biggest hurdle was starting to run my own business, securing referrals from colleagues and managing the early days of cash flow, but a year in it’s all settled down and again, there was so much support and advice on offer when I was feeling a bit daunted at the beginning.

  1. What’s in store for the next year?

I’m going to offer more property litigation input on large projects and support for real estate colleagues as well as continuing my work on the Women in Law Pledge with the Women Solicitors Network.

  1. What is the number one piece of advice you would give someone starting gunnercooke?

Just do it. Don’t worry about what other people will think. You’ll figure it out and you won’t look back.

  1. How does gunnercooke compare to other law firms you’ve worked at?

For me it’s the mix of excellent quality work, supportive colleagues who are all specialists and experienced at what they do, and the flexibility to design my workdays to suit me and my life outside work which has really made my experience at gunnercooke different to other firms,

I also love the socials and that the firm is working so hard to give back to other organisations. There are so many wonderful opportunities to be involved with and people are generous with their time and support. Oh, and did I mention gcTrust? They are amazing!  I’ve been so well supported since I started.

  1. How has your practice developed over the last year?

I’ve worked on some high-profile cases for developers and investors, and I’ve loved it, those cases are really challenging, and I really feel as though my technical expertise has developed from being on cross disciplinary teams. At 24 years PQE, to still have that level of challenge in terms of my work is priceless for me.

  1. How has the firm changed over the last year?

It’s increased in size, and I am no longer the new person!  It’s also evolving all the time and that’s one of the things I like about being here.

  1. How have you changed over the last year?

I’m proud of taking the leap into the unknown, for me it has paid off beyond what I thought I was achievable a year ago both in terms of work and developing a great network.
