July 9, 2024

We’re proud to announce that gunnercooke and House of Books & Friends have been shortlisted for the category of Corporate Partnership of the Year in 2024’s Third Sector Awards.

These prestigious awards, which take place on the 20th September, celebrate the outstanding achievements of individuals and organisations operating in the third sector, recognising their tireless efforts and transformative impact. They highlight the importance of collective action and show the value that the third sector has for local communities.

The Corporate Partnership of the Year award is given to a partnership between a charity, social enterprise or other voluntary organisation and a business that has brought strong mutual benefits.

House of Books & Friends is an independent bookshop, café and events space based in the heart of Manchester. It was created post-pandemic by co-founder of gunnercooke, Darryl Cooke, who decided to do something to address the increasing levels of loneliness which were recognised coming out of the pandemic.

He decided to bring together his passion for books with wanting to do something tangible that would help people to connect with each other. House of Books & Friends opened in December 2022, funded by gunnercooke.

Since then, House of Books & Friends has worked with a range of charities, raising awareness of, and helping address loneliness which can affect anyone, at any time.

Laura Jones, Project Director of gunnercooke, added: “The core mission of the House of Books & Friends is to help combat loneliness and social isolation in the community, an issue that more people are facing each day. Since we opened the shop in 2022, we have seen firsthand the difference it can make it people’s lives.

“It’s been fantastic having support from gunnercooke, which has its own purpose of being a business that makes a difference. Together we’ve devised launched a variety of initiatives, hosting exciting events and growing as a shop and a community hub.

“I’m excited to see what’s next in our partnership, and how we can work as a unit to ensure that we’re continuing to help and support our local community.”
