International Women’s Day Series: Recognising our shared humanity

March 7, 2026

International Women’s Day is often a moment for reflection, on progress made, challenges ahead, and the role each of us plays in shaping a more equal world. This year’s theme, ‘Give to Gain’, resonates deeply with Vitoria Nabas, Immigration Partner, because it speaks to something she sees as not optional, but essential: giving back as part of who we are, not just what we do.

This year’s theme is Give to Gain. What does giving mean to you?

Giving is the act of sharing whatever you can, time, knowledge, support, or simply presence, without questioning who receives it or why. For me, it’s a way of showing gratitude for everything I’ve been able to achieve. Giving is not transactional; it’s human. It’s one of the most meaningful ways I can honour the opportunities I’ve had by helping create opportunities for others.

Why is it important to you have time to give back alongside your career?

Balancing a demanding career with time to give back matters because privilege carries responsibility. Many of us, particularly in professional environments, have far more than we sometimes realise. Compared to so many people around the world, we have access to stability, education, and platforms that can genuinely make a difference.

Giving back isn’t about charity alone, it’s about recognising our shared humanity. Supporting others is not something we should wait to do “when we have time”; it should exist alongside our professional lives.

What are the causes important to you?

There are three causes I focus on consistently:

  • Human rights
  • Animal rights
  • Women’s rights

There are countless worthy causes, but I believe focus matters. By concentrating my energy on these areas, I can contribute more meaningfully rather than spreading myself too thin. Others can support these causes by getting involved locally, donating time or expertise, and, just as importantly, amplifying the voices that need to be heard.

Is there a campaign you are most proud of?

One of the initiatives closest to my heart is my long-standing work with a group of women supporting other women, particularly immigrants. Being an immigrant is not easy; it can be isolating, overwhelming, and emotionally exhausting. Having a strong support network can completely change that experience.

This community of women exists to ensure no one feels alone while navigating a new country, system, or life. That solidarity, women lifting other women, is powerful, and I’m incredibly proud to be part of it.

What does it mean to you to be part of a firm with a wider purpose?

I deeply admire the way gunnercooke supports wider social purpose, from the work of the gunnercooke foundation to the conversations led by Founder Darryl Cooke during The Symposium. These are not token gestures; they reflect genuine commitment.

I simply could not work in a place where these values were not prioritised. Giving back is not separate from my life, it is my life. I hope more people feel encouraged to volunteer, to support others, and to experience how rewarding and transformative giving can be.

Because when we give, sincerely and consistently, we all gain.
