gunnercooke Employment Partner Emma Hammond spoke on a panel in Westminster with the Menopause Mandate on World Menopause Day yesterday with MPs present.

Carol Vorderman chaired the ‘Menopause in the Workplace’ discussion, which Emma Hammond joined alongside GP and author Dr Philippa Kaye, HR Director Cathy Hastie and CEO Nina Wright.

It’s said that a million women have left their jobs because of menopause related symptoms and many of them have done so due to experiencing discrimination and unfair treatment.  Emma explained how menopause related discrimination cases can fall through the cracks due to menopause itself not being a protected characteristic under the Equality Act and she discussed whether we can expect any amendments to legislation in the near future.

Emma was invited to join the Menopause Mandate earlier this year, having particular expertise in advising women facing menopause-related discrimination at work, which forms part of her pro-bono practice. Charity & Philanthropy Partner Michele Price is also involved in the campaign, recently registering the organisation as a “for purpose” legal entity. Emma and Michele have also been quoted in a book published yesterday by the Menopause Mandate yesterday entitled “It’s Beyond a Joke”.

Following the series of discussions in Westminster, Emma attended a rally on College Green alongside key patrons from the Menopause Mandate, Mariella Frostup, their Chair, Lisa Snowdon, Penny Lancaster and MP Carolyn Harris, who leads the campaign.

Emma commented “It was a privilege to join so many fantastic women and share such important conversations on World Menopause Day. I’m fighting for better rights for employees going through the menopause and peri menopause and for improved education within the workplace, and enjoyed discussing this in more detail at yesterday’s event. We had a brilliant turn-out and the atmosphere at the rally was incredible! It’s amazing to finally see menopause on the agenda but there is still so much work to do.”
