gunnercooke Employment Partner Emma Hammond was invited to speak on a panel chaired by model and TV personality Penny Lancaster in Westminster last week to celebrate Menopause Mandate’s 1 year anniversary.

Emma was joined by Cathy Hastie, HR Director, PWC, Sue Sansome, Head of Learning and Development, Sytner Group and Ann Hayes from the British Standards Institute, in order to discuss menopause in the workplace.

Penny asked Emma for her views on the government’s response to the Women and Equalities Committee’s recommendations, particularly around menopause leave and amending the Equality Act to include menopause as a protected characteristic. Emma also discussed her hopes for the future and the need for action and commitment to education and awareness of the menopause within the workplace, not just for those experiencing symptoms but for all employees and especially managers.

Menopause Mandate was founded a year ago and is led by Mariella Frostup, with the aim of raising awareness of the inequalities faced by women during the peri- menopause and menopause. The organisation and its tireless campaigning through Carolyn Harris MP was behind the success of the introduction of the HRT PPC in April (which  now covers an unlimited number of certain HRT medicines in 12 months for £19.30 (the cost of 2 single NHS prescriptions)).

Emma was invited to be an Advocate for the organisation following her work around raising awareness of menopause in the workplace and acting pro bono for women affected by these issues in work, especially discrimination, as well as her work in supporting employers with education and training.

gunnercooke Charity & Philanthropy Partner Michele Price has also been involved in the campaign, setting the organisation up as a ‘for purpose’ legal entity.

The anniversary event was held at the Houses of Parliament and saw the announcement that Menopause Mandate would be heading stateside, supported by actress Naomi Watts.
